House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) husband, Paul Pelosi, was violently assaulted while at home.

The House speaker’s office issued a statement on the incident Friday.

“Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi,” the speaker’s office said.

The statement continues, “The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation. Mr. Pelosi was taken to the hospital, where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery. The Speaker was not in San Francisco at the time.”

The speaker and her family expressed their appreciation for “the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at this time.”

The incident comes just months after Paul Pelosi pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol, as IJR previously reported.

He was then sentenced to five days in jail.

In May it was reported that he was arrested on suspicion of DUI in Northern California, according to police records.

Drew Hammill, spokesperson for Nancy Pelosi, said at the time, “The Speaker will not be commenting on this private matter which occurred while she was on the East Coast.”

Nancy Pelosi was in Providence, Rhode Island, at the time where she delivered the commencement address at Brown University.

The California Highway Patrol released footage from Paul Pelosi’s arrest in August, as IJR previously reported.

When asked by an officer if he would be willing to take a breathalyzer test, he replied, “I don’t think so…I just want to go home.”

The officer told Paul Pelosi, “I can smell alcohol coming from your breath. I can see you are very unsteady on your feet.”

After attempting to explain to the officer he was a “high-profile person,” the officer responded, “I understand who you are and I’m not here to try to do anything to draw any negative attention to you.”
