House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is opening up in her first interview since the attack of her husband Paul Pelosi.

In an interview with CNN on Monday, Nancy Pelosi recalled where she was when she heard the news.

“I was sleeping in Washington D.C., I had just gotten in the night before from San Francisco and I hear the doorbell ring and think, it’s five something, it must be the wrong apartment,” the House Speaker explained.

Nancy Pelosi said that the ringing continued and she heard “bang, bang, bang, bang, bang on the door” which led her to run to the door. When she saw the Capitol police she remembers being “very scared.”

“They said, ‘We have to come in and talk to you.’ And I’m thinking my children, my grandchildren, I never thought it would be Paul because I knew he wouldn’t be out and about shall we say,” she continued.

Nancy Pelosi said that when the police arrived, they didn’t even know Paul Pelosi’s “condition.”

“We just knew there was an assault on him in our home,” she added.

She also spoke about the fact that she was meant to be the target and not her husband.

“For me this is really the hard part because Paul was not the target and he’s the one who is paying the price,” Nancy Pelosi told CNN.

She shared that during the interview, she was “close to tears a number of times in this conversation.”

On Oct. 28, Paul Pelosi was attacked in their San Francisco home and was in his bathroom when he called the police at 2:27 a.m.

When police officers arrived they witnessed Paul Pelosi and the attacker fighting for control over a hammer.

The attacker was identified as 42-year-old David DePape and he would be charged with elder abuse, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, attempted homicide, and “several other additional felonies.”
