Gov. Phil Murphy of New Jersey issued a statement reacting to the incident.

“I am stunned by the news of Sayreville Councilwoman Eunice Dwumfour’s murder last evening in an act of gun violence. Her career of public service was just the beginning, and by all accounts she had already built a reputation as a committed member of the Borough Council who took her responsibility with the utmost diligence and seriousness,” Murphy said.

He continued, “I send my condolences to Councilwoman Dwumfour’s family and friends, her governing body colleagues, and the entire Sayreville community.”

Concluding his statement, Murphy said Sayreville is a “proud, tight-knit, and safe community and I know that it will come together, as it always has, in common purpose.”

Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick also issued a statement, describing Dwumfour as a “dedicated member of our Borough Council who was truly committed to serve all of our residents.”

She called the murder a “despicable criminal act.”

The Times noted Dwumfour was elected to the Sayreville Borough Council in 2021.

She was in the process of serving a three-year term.

In a statement on the Sayreville Republican Party’s website, Dwumfour said at the time she was “fully dedicated to building a better, stronger Sayreville, and with your support, we can create a brighter future for our wonderful town.”
