Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) grew emotional while talking about a shooting that took place in Louisville.

“This is awful. I have a very close friend that didn’t make it today. And I have another close friend who didn’t, either, and one who is at the hospital that I hope is gonna make it through,” Beshear said during a press conference Monday.

He continued, “So when we talk about praying, I hope people will. For those that we are hoping can make it through the surgeries that they’re going through. And then we’ve got to … wrap our arms around these families. And everybody who needs it, don’t be afraid to get some help.”

Beshear told the press, “Our bodies and our minds are not meant to go through these types of tragedies.”

Acknowledging “there are a lot of people hurting today,” he added, “If we have a place to focus our energy, I hope it is to surround them with the love and the compassion that we have been so good at showing one another.”

According to The New York Times, the suspected gunman killed at least five people and injured eight others at a bank in Louisville.

It was also reported that the suspected gunman died on the scene.

Paul Humphrey, the deputy chief of the Louisville Metro Police Department, said, “We do not know exactly the circumstances of his death at this time.”

He added, “We believe this is a lone gunman involved in this that did have a connection to the bank.”

The chief executive of Old National Bank, Jim Ryan, posted a statement addressing the shooting to Facebook.

“The safety of Old National Bank employees and everyone we serve in our banking center locations is paramount,” Ryan wrote.

He continued, “As we await more details, we are deploying employee assistance support and keeping everyone affected by this tragedy in our thoughts and prayers.”
