Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz appeared on Fox Business Wednesday and accused Democrats of weaponizing the Department of Justice (DOJ) against President-elect Donald Trump, and he also praised Pam Bondi’s performance at her confirmation hearing Wednesday.
During an appearance on “The Bottom Line,” Cruz accused the Democrats of hypocrisy and said their behavior was self-defeating.
“I think Pam Bondi did a terrific job at the hearing today. I think she is going to be confirmed as attorney general. She’s a very strong choice,” Cruz said.
Democrats, Cruz said, “made fools of themselves,” and he added that some of the things they said were ironic.
“What they were attacking Pam Bondi for is what Joe Biden’s Justice Department has done for four years, which is [they] politicized and weaponized the Department of Justice,” Cruz said.
Cruz said there’s a shift in prosecutorial practices when it comes to former presidents, and that, he added, has only occurred under recent Democratic oversight.
“We have never indicted or prosecuted a president or former president until the Democrats took over, and in the last four years Democrat prosecutors have indicted and prosecuted Donald Trump four separate times. Pam Bondi will restore integrity to the Department of Justice,” Cruz said.
During the hearing, Democratic California Sen. Adam Schiff pressed Bondi on whether she can reject what he said were any unlawful directives from President-elect Donald Trump and instead offer counsel that might diverge from his opinions. Schiff asked Bondi about whether she plans to prosecute former Republican Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney and maintain the evidence gathered by the Jan. 6 Select Committee.
Bondi said she would adhere to legal standards and consult with ethical authorities within the DOJ concerning the committee’s evidence. She said she has received no requests to investigate or file criminal charges against Cheney.
Trump appointed Bondi as his nominee for attorney general following former Republican Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz’s decision to withdraw his nomination.
