Veteran political analyst Brit Hume said Wednesday on Fox News that President-elect Donald Trump’s ability to enact his agenda may be complicated by the slim majorities his party holds in Congress.

During an appearance on “Special Report with Bret Baier,” Hume noted the importance of the slim majorities held by Trump’s party in both houses of Congress and said that maintaining unity is crucial for advancing legislative priorities. Hume also said that despite Trump entering office with the highest approval ratings of his political career—peaking at 50 percent—this support remains fragile.

“It’s worth noting that his popularity rating is the highest it’s ever been, but it’s at 50, just a majority. And a majority think that his election was less about him than it was about resistance and a desire to get rid of Joe Biden. So, you know, and he’s strongly affected here by the fact that his party does have the majority in control of both houses of Congress, which makes his path a lot easier,” Hume told Bret Baier.

“But there are very narrow majorities there as well. So the challenge for him is going to be keeping all this together and moving his agenda forward in an atmosphere where I think, you know, support for him can fade quickly because it’s so very thin in terms of the size of his support.”

Hume said that the confirmation process for Trump’s nominees has, so far, seen less opposition than anticipated. Nominees like Pete Hegseth have overcome initial resistance, notably after Republican Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa endorsed him.

“I think it’s so far the resistance of the nominees that have been, had their hearings at least so far, seems to have crumbled, especially and most conspicuously in the case of Pete Hegseth, after his testimony yesterday, in which he got attacked,” Hume said. “But at the end of it, of course, Joni Ernst, who is herself, of course, a military veteran and to whom a lot of Republicans, I think, were looking for leadership on this nomination. When she said she was for him, it looks like that the resistance there has faded away as well.”
