The Department of Justice is ready to ask a grand jury to indict former U.S. national security adviser John Bolton, a source said.
Bolton served under President Donald Trump in his first administration, per Reuters.
Possible charges are in connection with Bolton’s handling of classified documents, including charges under the Espionage Act, Bloombergreported.
Bolton has denied any wrongdoing.
If indicted, Bolton would be the latest person to face criminal charges against Trump’s perceived enemies.
The Justice Department has also indicted former FBI director James Comey, who investigated Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, as well as New York Attorney General Letitia James, who brought a civil fraud case against Trump and his family real estate company, per Reuters.
Bolton served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations as well as White House national security adviser during Trump’s first term. Since then, he had been a fierce critic of his former boss.
In his memoir release last year, Bolton said Trump was unfit to be president.
FBI agents searched Bolton’s home and Washington office in August when they discovered items marked as classified, secret and confidential during the office search, according to a court filing, Bloomberg reported.
If an indictment is returned, officials have discussed a plan under which Bolton would surrender to authorities on Friday. An initial appearance would be in federal court in Greenbelt, Maryland, according to sources.
