A Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker transiting the Strait of Hormuz was seized by Iranian forces on Friday, marking the first such interdiction in months in one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes.

According to The Associated Press, a U.S. defense official said the tanker, named the Talara, was traveling from Ajman in the United Arab Emirates toward Singapore when it was intercepted and forced into Iranian territorial waters.

Iran has not publicly acknowledged the operation, but the seizure comes as Tehran has issued increasingly sharp warnings following its 12-day war with Israel in June — a conflict that prompted U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

A U.S. official, speaking anonymously due to the sensitivity of intelligence matters, said a U.S. Navy MQ-4C Triton drone monitored the area for hours as the seizure unfolded.

Ambrey, a private maritime security firm, said the incident involved three small boats that approached the tanker before it was diverted.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center also reported the confrontation, categorizing the event as a possible “state activity” that forced the Talara off its course.

Columbia Shipmanagement, a Cyprus-based company overseeing the vessel, later said it had “lost contact” with the crew and ship, which was carrying high-sulphur gasoil.

“The company has notified the relevant authorities and is working closely with all relevant parties — including maritime security agencies and the vessel owner — to restore contact with the vessel,” the firm said. “The safety of the crew remains our foremost priority.”

The U.S. Navy has repeatedly blamed Iran for destabilizing maritime security, citing a wave of incidents in recent years — including limpet mine attacks on tankers in 2019 and a deadly 2021 drone strike on an Israeli-linked vessel that killed two crew members.

Tensions surged after President Donald Trump withdrew from Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal during his first term, prompting a long series of maritime confrontations.

Iran’s last major tanker seizure occurred in May 2022, when it detained two Greek-flagged vessels for several months. The broader picture grew more complicated during the Israel-Hamas war, as Iran-backed Houthi forces targeted commercial ships in the Red Sea, severely disrupting global shipping.

Now, the seizure of the Talara threatens to further inflame already strained relations. Iran has long threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz — the gateway through which roughly 20% of global oil trade flows — while the U.S. Navy’s Bahrain-based 5th Fleet continues its mission to keep the waterway open.

The latest incident underscores the heightened volatility across the region and the growing risks to international shipping as geopolitical pressures intensify.
