As shock rippled through Hollywood following reports of Rob Reiner’s death, two of his closest friends quietly made their way to his Los Angeles home to grieve in private.

According to PEOPLE, Billy Crystal and Larry David visited Reiner’s Brentwood residence Sunday night, shortly after news broke that the legendary filmmaker and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, had been found dead in what authorities described as an apparent homicide.

A source told PEOPLE that Crystal, 77, and David, 78, arrived separately at the home on the evening of Sunday, Dec. 14. Their visit came as word spread that the longtime Hollywood couple had been killed inside their residence.

Multiple sources confirmed to PEOPLE that Reiner and his wife were killed by their son, Nick.

A neighbor who witnessed the somber scene described Crystal’s emotional state to ABC 7 Los Angeles.

“He looked like he was about to cry,” the neighbor said.

Crystal shared a deep professional and personal bond with Reiner that spanned decades. The two collaborated on several iconic films, including When Harry Met Sally, This Is Spinal Tap and The Princess Bride. Reiner also appeared on David’s HBO series Curb Your Enthusiasm, cementing ties between the three comedy legends.

Should there be more support for mental health resources for those grieving in the entertainment industry?

Earlier Sunday afternoon, emergency responders were dispatched to the Reiner home. The Los Angeles Fire Department told PEOPLE it received a medical aid call around 3:30 p.m. at a residence in the Brentwood neighborhood.

When firefighters arrived, they found a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman dead inside the home. Sources confirmed to PEOPLE that the victims were Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. Other sources said the couple was first discovered by their daughter, Romy.

Reiner’s death marked a stunning loss for the entertainment industry. A director, producer, and actor, his career shaped generations of moviegoers. He made his directorial debut with This Is Spinal Tap in 1984 and followed it with an extraordinary run that included Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, Misery and A Few Good Men.

Before becoming a celebrated filmmaker, Reiner rose to fame as an actor, playing Mike “Meathead” Stivic on Norman Lear’s groundbreaking sitcom All in the Family.

Rob and Michele met during the production of When Harry Met Sally…. They married in 1989 and had three children together. Earlier in life, Reiner was married to Penny Marshall, who died in 2018 at age 75 due to complications from diabetes.

As investigators continued piecing together what happened inside the Reiner home, the quiet visit from Crystal and David underscored the personal loss behind a tragedy that has shaken Hollywood to its core.
