President Donald Trump threatened Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney with a 100% tariff if the U.S.’s northern neighbor “makes a deal with China.”

Trump warned Carney — whom he referred to as “Governor” in a Saturday morning Truth Social post — against making Canada a “Drop Off Port” for Chinese goods to enter the U.S. to evade tariffs. The president also suggested, in addition to facing a massive tariff from the U.S., Canada would be destroyed from within by China if it moves forward with its budding partnership with the U.S. adversary.

“If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a ‘Drop Off Port’ for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken,” Trump wrote in his post. “China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life.”

“If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A.,” the president stressed.

The U.S. placing a 100% tariff on Canada would effectively double the cost of goods it imports from the bordering country.

While meeting Jan. 15 with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Carney spoke positively of Canada’s “partnership” with China, adding he believes the “progress” made in the relationship between the two countries “sets us up well for the new world order.”

“We’re heartened by the leadership of President Xi Jinping and the speed with which our relationship has progressed,” the Liberal Canadian leader also said during the trip, referring to China’s communist dictator.

Should Canada proceed with its partnership with China despite Trump's threats of tariffs?

The following day, Carney gave an over-two-minute-long answer to a reporter who asked him to clarify what he had meant by a “new world order.”

“I think the world is still determining what that order is going to be,” the prime minister said. “What is going to govern global trade? What is the role of the [World Trade Organization] going to be? How important are bilateral deals, such as the one we’re developing?”

The same day, Carney’s government announced a “new strategic partnership” with Xi’s government which was “focused on energy, agri-food, and trade.” In the agreement, Canada allowed nearly 50,000 Chinese electric vehicles (EV) into its market, and set what it had called “an ambitious goal to increase exports to China by 50%.”

“As the Prime Minister said this week, Canada and the United States have built a remarkable partnership in our economy and security — and we will remain focused on ensuring the future of that relationship will benefit workers and businesses on both sides of our border,” Dominic LeBlanc, who serves as Carney’s Minister for Canada–U.S. Trade said in a statement posted to X.

“There is no pursuit of a free trade deal with China. What was achieved was resolution on several important tariff issues. Canada’s new government is building a stronger Canadian economy, with a plan that is building our strength at home and strengthening our trading partnerships throughout the world,” LeBlanc added.

Trump previously used the word “Governor” to refer to Carney’s predecessor, former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and joked about the prospect of Canada becoming the U.S.’s “51st state.”

The White House did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s (DCNF) request for comment.
