President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address is shaping up to be more than just a policy speech — it’s turning into a political spectacle.

As Trump prepares to deliver one of the most high-profile speeches of the year, several Democratic lawmakers are planning a coordinated counter-message, bringing guests tied to two explosive issues: the Jeffrey Epstein scandal and Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations.

Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar announced she will bring four guests to Tuesday night’s address, three of whom she claims were detained during ICE operations in Minnesota. Among them is Aliya Rahman, who appeared in a viral video showing federal agents pulling her from her vehicle. Omar’s office linked the detentions to what she described as “Operation Metro Surge,” criticizing ICE’s enforcement actions as harmful to community safety and economic stability.

“The stories of these four Minnesotans reflect how ICE’s reckless actions in Minnesota… have devastated Minnesotans’ safety and economic security,” her office said in a press release.

But immigration enforcement isn’t the only flashpoint Democrats plan to highlight.

Several lawmakers are also bringing alleged victims and family members connected to Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking network, an issue that has reignited public outrage and renewed calls for full transparency surrounding the so-called Epstein files.

California Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna announced he will attend with Haley Robson, an alleged survivor of Epstein’s abuse. Robson previously appeared alongside Khanna and Republican Rep. Thomas Massie outside the Capitol, pressing for the public release of Epstein-related records.

“Haley’s courageous fight is proof that this isn’t about politics,” Khanna said, framing her presence as a demand for accountability and justice.

Should Democrats counter Trump's State of the Union address with a coordinated message?

Virginia Democratic Rep. James Walkinshaw is bringing Jess Michaels, who alleges Epstein sexually abused her in 1991. Meanwhile, Reps. Suhas Subramanyan and Jamie Raskin will host Sky and Amanda Roberts, family members of Virginia Giuffre — one of Epstein’s most prominent accusers who died by suicide in 2025.

Raskin issued a blistering statement accusing Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi of participating in a “shocking coverup” tied to the Epstein files — a charge that adds another layer of political tension to the night.

House Oversight Committee Ranking Member Robert Garcia is taking a different approach. Though he will not attend the address, he is sending Annie Farmer, sister of alleged Epstein survivor Maria Farmer, in his place. Garcia said he plans to participate in a “People’s State of the Union” instead, coordinating appearances with Farmer throughout the evening.

The coordinated guest strategy signals Democrats are aiming to visually and symbolically challenge Trump’s narrative during the nationally televised event. By spotlighting immigration enforcement controversies and unresolved questions surrounding Epstein’s network, they appear poised to shift attention toward issues they argue demand greater accountability.

With both sides preparing to use the moment to sharpen their message, Tuesday night’s address may deliver more political theater than policy unity.
