For more than three decades, Michelle Pfeiffer and David E. Kelley had one firm rule: never mix marriage with work.

According to Fox News, that boundary finally gave way — not out of necessity, but because of a role neither of them could ignore.

The longtime couple is teaming up for the first time on the new Apple TV+ series “Margot’s Got Money Troubles,” marking a major shift after 32 years together.

The show, adapted from Rufi Thorpe’s novel, features Pfeiffer as Shyanne Millet, a former waitress navigating a complicated relationship with her daughter.

The project unexpectedly came into Pfeiffer’s orbit.

“My husband and I have never worked together and there was this book laying on the counter in the kitchen and I kept walking by it,” she recalled. “And I was [like] ‘What’s that?’ He said, ‘Oh yeah, that’s a book… Oh, and by the way, there’s a part in there that everyone thinks no one can play but you.’”

Once she picked it up, her hesitation disappeared.

“I just fell madly in love with her and I couldn’t imagine anyone else playing her,” Pfeiffer said, explaining that the character’s Southern California roots felt especially personal.

For years, the idea of collaborating had been off-limits.

“I’ve seen a lot of couples where they seem to have a really great marriage, and then they work together and next year they’re filing for divorce,” Pfeiffer previously said, outlining why the pair had avoided mixing their professional and personal lives.

She later elaborated on the concern, noting, “We’re both kind of fierce when we work… if I come home, and I’ve had a bad day… I want him to be on my side because he hasn’t heard the other side.”

Despite those fears, the script proved too compelling.

Kelley, known for creating hit series like “Ally McBeal” and “Big Little Lies,” said casting came together naturally — especially when it came to his wife.

“When I read the book, I could only see one person playing it, and we’re lucky enough that she said yes, the second luckiest yes I’ve gotten from her,” he said.

Pfeiffer, for her part, joked about the long-standing pact. “And the actress there in the middle, who I vowed never to work with,” Kelley said, prompting her to quip, “I’m very difficult.”

The experience ultimately exceeded expectations.

“It was actually one of the best productions I’ve ever worked on,” Pfeiffer said. “It was honestly so beautiful… And we’re still together.”

The couple’s relationship dates back to 1993, when they met on a blind date and quickly built a life together, marrying later that same year.

Now, decades later, their long-avoided collaboration has finally become a reality — one that both say was worth the wait.
