France’s National Assembly approved a strict assisted-dying law for adults with incurable, life-threatening illnesses, sending the measure to a Constitutional Council review after a 291-241 vote and years of debate; the law allows self-administration of a lethal dose with medical safeguards, with doctors or nurses assisting only when a patient cannot act themselves. Eligibility requires adult citizenship or long-term residency, a verified serious condition with unbearable pain, and a formal process including a two-day reflection period, with the Senate having previously blocked the bill before the Assembly’s final say.
