Egyptian TV presenter Sarah Khalifa and 11 co-defendants were sentenced to death by hanging for forming an organized criminal gang that produced and trafficked synthetic drugs, with authorities also citing possession of unlicensed firearms; the ruling followed seizures of more than 750 kilograms of narcotics and lab facilities and was issued after a Grand Mufti advisory. Some reports note Khalifa also received five-year prison terms in a separate kidnapping and assault case, and the verdict remains subject to appeal.
