SK Hynix plans memory chip factory in Miyagi — Aug 19, 2026SK Hynix is pursuing a memory chip fab in Miyagi Prefecture, northeastern Japan, with talks of an investment in the tens of trillions of won and a plan that would mark its first large-scale overseas production base in Japan, amid a visit by chairman Chey Tae-won. If realized, it would make SK Hynix the third foreign semiconductor maker to operate a plant in Japan, following Micron and TSMC, as Tokyo seeks to rebuild its semiconductor ecosystem and global capacity pressures influence timing and location decisions.
