Republican Florida Rep. Byron Donalds was shouted down Monday night at a raucous Florida town hall as protestors repeatedly interrupted him over cuts conducted by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Donalds tried several times to explain the Trump administration’s approach to streamlining government spending, but was drowned out by boos, yelling and applause from an increasingly disorderly audience. Much of the outraged centered around DOGE’s deep cuts various federal bureaucracies and their workforces, particularly the Social Security Administration, where office closures prompted delays and panic among seniors.

“This is my question for the audience,” Donalds said before deputies removed at least two protestors who refused to stop shouting. “Do you want to yell or do you want to hear? Because if you want to hear, I’m trying to give you information. I told you: I am going to be factual. But you can yell or you can hear. The truth is, Joe Biden gave similar access to the same database during his administration to students.”

The town hall at Estero High School began with Donalds stating he wanted to “keep politics out” of the event and focus on “the actual information” and “the actual details.” That message was quickly abandoned as attendees peppered him with hostile questions about President Donald Trump, DOGE and Musk. While some in the audience applauded his remarks, others continuously heckled — interrupting answers, talking over fellow attendees and demanding “yes or no” responses to complex oversight questions.

When Donalds tried to shift attention to government waste under the Biden administration, the crowd erupted in more jeers.

“Allow me to educate and bring you the full story. And when you’re ready, I’m going to tell you, because I don’t want you to yell and not hear the full story. Because you’re not listening, you’re yelling,” the congressman said.

The disruptions reaching a boiling point when a few individuals began yowling about Gaza and diversity programs. One protestor stood and shouted until Donalds warned she’d be removed.

“Let’s have a disagreement,” he said. “But when you’re going to stand and yell and disrespect everybody in this room because you think you’re being heard — let’s be clear, you’re not.”

The official X account of the Florida Democratic Party seemed to celebrate the disruption, posting a video from the town hall as proof that “Republicans can’t defend DOGE.”

The flashpoint largely came over DOGE’s recent shake-up at the Social Security Administration, which has included layoffs, office closures and new fraud-screening software. Musk has repeatedly claimed rampant fraud and “vampire” beneficiaries are bleeding the system dry, justifying aggressive streamlining. Critics, like Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, argue the changes are causing confusion and delay for seniors accustomed to traditional Social Security systems. The median age in Estero is 65.4, according to 2023 census data.

Donalds serves on the House Oversight Committee and has been directly involved in DOGE’s legislative implementation. The president endorsed Donalds’ 2026 gubernatorial candidacy in February.
