President Joe Biden suffered an unfortunate slip up while speaking about the value of democracy.

“Ladies and gentlemen, today we remember, and we reaffirm freedom is worth the sacrifice,” Biden said during a Memorial Day speech.

He continued, “Democracy is not perfect. It’s never been good — perfect.”

He quickly corrected himself after realizing the error.

Finally, Biden said, “It’s worth fighting for.”

Biden has made the health of American democracy a major issue during his time in office.

During an event in Buffalo, New York, after a gunman killed 10 people in a supermarket, the president sound the alarm about the state of democracy.

“Look, the American experiment in democracy is in a danger like it hasn’t been in my lifetime,” Biden said.

He added, “It’s in a danger this hour. Hate and fear have been given too much oxygen by those who pretend to love America, but who don’t understand America.”

In December, he held a Summit for Democracy in which 80 world leaders participated.

“This is an urgent matter on all our parts, in my view, because the data we’re seeing is largely pointing in the wrong direction,” Biden said as he pointed to studies that show democracy is in decline around the world.

The president added, “In the face of sustained and alarming challenges to democracy, universal human rights, and, all around the world, democracy needs champions.”

He also said, “American democracy is an ongoing struggle to live up to our highest ideals and to heal our divisions; to recommit ourselves to the founding idea of our nation captured in our Declaration of Independence.”
