Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is firing back at President Donald Trump’s accusations about his religious views.
Following Trump’s radio interview with Geraldo Rivera, Biden released a statement criticizing what he calls an “attack on [his] faith.” According to Biden, Trump’s actions are “beneath the office he holds.”
“For President Trump to attack my faith is shameful. It’s beneath the office he holds and it’s beneath the dignity the American people so rightly expect and deserve from their leaders,” Biden wrote.
According to Biden, the remarks reveal more about Trump than anyone else as he questioned the president’s character.
“President Trump’s comments reveal more about him than they do about anyone else,” Biden wrote. “They show us a man willing to stoop to any low for political gain, and someone whose actions are completely at odds with the values and teachings that he professes to believe in.”
The former vice president also shared the importance of his religious views and the impact it had on his life.
“My faith teaches me to love my neighbor as I would myself, while President Trump only seeks to divide us. My faith teaches me to care for the least among us, while President Trump seems to only be concerned about his gilded friends. My faith teaches me to welcome the stranger, while President Trump tears families apart. My faith teaches me to walk humbly, while President Trump teargassed peaceful protesters so he could walk over to a church for a photo op.”
Biden’s remarks follow Trump’s claims insisting he is “essentially against religion,” as previously reported on IJR. Almost immediately after making the comments, Rivera asked Trump if his remark was a bit “harsh.” He admitted that it was.
However, he still suggested the people who “control” Biden are against religion.
“Well, the people who control him totally are,” Trump said. “It may be a little harsh for him. but he’s going to have no control.”
