In a poll looking ahead to the 2024 presidential election, President Joe Biden holds a significant lead over former President Donald Trump.
A new Yahoo! News/YouGov poll asked respondents, “If the 2024 election were held today, who would you vote for?” Forty-eight percent said they would vote for Biden, while 36% said they would vote for Trump. Sixteen percent responded saying they were not sure.
When asked, “Should President Trump run for president again in 2024?” Thirty-one percent said yes while 57% said no. Twelve percent are not sure.
The respondents were also questioned about whether Trump is helping or hurting Republicans. Only 32% believe he is helping the Republican Party, while 47% claim he is hurting the Republican Party.
The former president has not made it clear whether he is planning on running again, but a long-time Republican pollster predicted he would win the nomination if he chose to, as IJR reported.
“If Donald Trump runs for president, as a Republican, he’s the odds-on favorite to win the nomination. He could never win a general election,” veteran Republican pollster Frank Luntz said during an interview on The New York Times’ “Sway” podcast earlier this month.
He added, “But I can’t imagine losing a Republican primary. That’s how significant he is within the GOP. And yet, he’s lost all of those crossover voters that would deny him the chance to win in a general election.”
Luntz was then asked, “So he will be the nominee but not win, right? At this moment.”
He responded, “I would bet on him to be the nominee. And I would bet on him losing to whatever Democratic nominee there was.”
The Daily Wire’s Candace Owens asked Trump earlier this month if he plans to run for president in 2024, as IJR reported.
“The answer is I’m absolutely enthused. I look forward to doing an announcement at the right time,” Trump responded. “As you know, it’s very early, but I think people are going to be very, very happy … when I make a certain announcement.”
He continued, “For campaign finance reasons, you really can’t do it too early because it becomes a whole different thing. Otherwise, I’d give you an answer that I think you’d be very happy with.”
