Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Wednesday that people trust Communist China over the United States to “do the right thing” due to President Donald Trump.

Buttigieg said on “Late Night with Stephen Colbert” that the U.S. has “diminished” in the world and is no longer a “leading nation” under Trump. He also claimed that Trump’s leadership has made people around the world now put more trust in Communist China over America.

“When I was a student, it was just understood that the U.S. was the leading nation in the world. Not just the biggest, not just the richest, not just the most powerful, but the country that people looked to because of our values, as well as because of our strength,” Buttigieg told host Stephen Colbert. “And now, under Donald Trump, there are, by some measures, more people around the world who trust China to do the right thing than the United States. That should bother every patriotic American. Because the reality is when people do not trust the United States, that affects us.”

China has posed a threat to the U.S. and the western world for decades. The Chinese are rapidly expanding their military and nuclear capabilities that could potentially target U.S. territories like Hawaii and Alaska. The People’s Republic of China (PRC) is also accused of aggressive espionage, including infiltrating the U.S. airspace and academic campuses.

The Chinese government also poses an economic threat to the western world, prompting the Trump administration to try and move more labor and factory jobs back to the U.S. Bytedance, a Chinese company that used to be TikTok’s parent company, operates a strictly controlled version of TikTok for their own citizens, while offering a more addicting version of their app to youths in the U.S. and other countries.

Democratic Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s administration is closely associated with a non-profit that has repeatedly hosted members of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and Beijing’s intelligence network at City Hall. Her 2021 mayoral campaign also received over $300,000 from an organization founded by Gary Yu, who is listed as a member of the CCP.

Trump is scheduled to visit China in May with the goal of stabilizing U.S.-China relations.
