Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas claimed Wednesday that former President Donald Trump and Republican Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio encouraged “domestic terrorism” by discussing the effects of a massive influx of Haitian migrants into Springfield, Ohio.

Trump and Vance amplified unconfirmed reports of pets being stolen and eaten by Haitian immigrants in the town via social media and during the Sept. 10 debate. Crockett asked during the House Judiciary Committee’s Select Subcommittee hearing on the Weaponization of the Federal Government if the FBI will investigate in the town, alleging that there is “domestic terrorism afoot.”

“I’m curious to know if any of you are aware as to whether or not the FBI is involved at all in determining what’s going on in Springfield, Ohio, because as far as I’m concerned, there is domestic terrorism afoot, and it is at the word of the Republican nominee and his running mate,” Crockett said. “So do we know if anyone is checking into that on the federal level? I’m just curious. Just a yes or no. Anybody?”

One witness responded that he didn’t know if the FBI was looking into anything, prompting Crockett to respond, “OK, perfect.”

Springfield residents told the Daily Caller News Foundation that the city struggled to handle the influx of approximately 20,000 migrants, alleging that there has been an increase in traffic accidents and housing prices. Local pastor Barron Seelig told the DCNF that the arrival of the Haitian migrants, who he said had “invaded” the “sleepy” city, made it hard to find housing for the homeless in Springfield.

Residents blamed the city’s struggles on the Biden administration’s border policies. Some crimes, including auto theft and shoplifting, climbed in Springfield after the migrants arrived, according to data obtained by the DCNF.

Border Patrol encountered nearly 7.4 million illegal immigrants since the start of fiscal year 2021, according to figures released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
