Democrats launched an eight-figure campaign Thursday in an attempt to counter President Donald Trump’s tax-cutting agenda.

“Families Over Billionaires,” the nonprofit behind the effort, plans to “elevate the voices” of Democrats who oppose tax cuts for the wealthy through a broad television, radio and social media advertising campaign, its website said. The organization aims to act as a strategic “war room” dedicated to countering Trump and House Republicans’ efforts to extend and expand the 2017 tax cuts, which are set to expire at the end of 2025.

“With all of the challenges in our country today, it’s time to stop pointing fingers, come together, and give massive tax cuts to billionaires — the people who need it the most,” actors said in the nonprofit’s sarcastic advertisement.

The organization is spearheaded by a coalition of labor unions, Democratic elected officials and left-wing think tanks, primarily the Center for American Progress (CAP). Backers include former Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Shalanda Young, former Democratic Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown and Democratic New York Rep. Pat Ryan. The group’s chief strategist, Michael Linden, was also a Biden-era OMB official.

“Families Over Billionaires” has also partnered with several labor unions and nonprofit advocacy groups, including the National Education Association (NEA), Service Employees International Union, Unrig Our Economy and Fair Share America.

The effort marks the latest Democratic attempt to refine their economic messaging — a persistent challenge for the party, which has traditionally trailed Trump and the GOP in voters’ perceptions of economic competence, an issue voters consistently rank as their top priority.

It is unclear when House Republicans will debate the tax extensions as they navigate a sprawling legislative agenda packed with competing priorities, including proposed spending cuts, border security measures and rollbacks of energy regulations. House Speaker Mike Johnson emphasized the need for Republicans to “preserve and build on Trump’s historic tax reform,” claiming their expiration would cost the American economy 6 million jobs and $1 trillion in GDP losses.

Republicans aim to permanently codify the 2017 tax cuts and expand key provisions, including child tax credits and reducing tax rates across all income brackets. The party holds a razor-thin 217-215 majority in the House of Representatives.

The eight-figure “Families Over Billionaires” campaign currently has over 200 X followers and has amassed over a thousand YouTube views on its first advertisement since the Thursday launch.
