A mother and her son from New York have been arrested in connection with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) laptop that was stolen during the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
According to NBC News, the FBI received a tip leading them to Maryann Mooney-Rondon, 55, and her son, Rafael Rondon, 23, of Watertown, New York.
Mooney-Rondon reportedly admitted to being in the Capitol on January 6 as well as in Pelosi’s conference room. She also allegedly gave gloves or a scarf to a man to steal the House speaker’s computer without leaving fingerprints behind, as the outlet reports.
A legal filing released on Friday announced the duo had been charged with theft of government property, obstruction of an official proceeding, entering/remaining in a restricted building, disorderly conduct in a restricted building, entering/remaining in the gallery of Congress, entering/remaining in certain rooms of the Capitol, and disorderly conduct in the Capitol.
“Both Rafael Rondon and Maryann Mooney-Rondon appeared today in Syracuse, New York, before United States Magistrate Judge Therese Wiley-Dancks, and were released pending further court proceedings,” the filing read.
It continued, “The charge against Rafael Rondon alleging his possession of an unregistered sawed-off shotgun carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000.00, and a term of supervised release of up to 3 years.”
Several rioters entered Pelosi’s office during the attack. Richard Barnett, 60, was arrested after photos surfaced showing him sitting in her office.
During a court hearing in March, Barnett begged a judge to let him out of jail.
“They’re dragging this out. They’re letting everyone else out,” Barnett said. “I’ve been here a long time. It’s not fair.”
USA Today reported last week more than 600 individuals had been charged with participating in the riot.
