California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is being mocked over his argument against a leaked draft memo which shows the Supreme Court could overturn Roe v. Wade.

“Your body, your choice, it’s a hell of a moment to live in,” he said. “We will not be defeated. We will stand tall, we will stand firm, and we will affirm the constitutional — currently constitutionally-protected rights — of women and girls.”

Newsom posted a portion of his remarks to Twitter with the caption, saying, “If men could get pregnant, this wouldn’t even be a conversation. This decision isn’t about strengthening families – it’s about extremism. It’s about control.”

He continued, “We will fight for the right to choose.”

Twitter users jumped on the opportunity to call out Newsom for failing to recognize the progressive argument that says men can get pregnant.

Lazy (and overused) talking point aside, it was just a few months ago when Democrats claimed it’s not just women who can get pregnant. https://t.co/96tcPLZC84

Newsom also issued a series of tweets just after the memo was leaked, as IJR reported.

“Our daughters, sisters, mothers, and grandmothers will not be silenced. The world is about to hear their fury,” Newsom said.

He added, “California will not sit back. We are going to fight like hell.”

Newsom later said, “We are proposing an amendment to enshrine the right to choose in the California constitution. We can’t trust SCOTUS to protect the right to abortion, so we’ll do it ourselves. Women will remain protected here.”

The governor is not the only one furious over the memo.

Both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris expressed their frustration with the leaked memo.

Harris argued it is clear that “opponents of Roe want to punish women and take away their rights to make decisions about their own bodies. Republican legislators in states across the country are weaponizing the use of the law against women.”

She continued, “The rights of all Americans are at risk. If the right to privacy is weakened, every person could face a future in which the government can potentially interfere in the personal decisions you make about your life. This is the time to fight for women and for our country with everything we have.”
