Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has said he sees no need to debate his Democratic foe again since he won the first debate Tuesday.
However, many of his Republican allies are urging him to debate Vice President Kamala Harris, whose team immediately called for another debate, per The Hill.
“I think it would be an opportunity,” said Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.). “If I was in Trump’s position, I would.”
Some have said that Trump missed an opportunity to talk about his policies. Instead, he focused on nonsensical theories, such as Haitian immigrants eating pets in Springfield, Ohio.
“I believe we missed a lot of opportunities last night,” Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) said and agreed a second debate could be a good thing.
“It makes a lot more sense to, instead of talking about cats and dogs, talk about 1.5 million got-aways,” Tillis said. “That’s a lot more frightening to me, and it’s a real threat.”
Others believe if another debate takes place, it should be in a more conservative setting.
“I wouldn’t ever debate again in a liberal setting. I don’t think it should be at CNN, I don’t think it needs to be at ABC. He’s done two of those,” Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) said. Instead, it should be at Fox News or another conservative outlet.
Fox News suggested hosting a debate in October, with moderators anchors Bret Baier and Martha McCallum at the helm.
“I don’t know. That’s up to him,” said Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.), The Hill reported.
“That’s up to them to decide. Although, usually if you’re winning, you don’t want another debate, so it’s curious that the Harris people want one. … Despite all the media talk and the punditry going on, I think they’re very concerned about the trajectory of the race over the last 10 days, especially as voters learn more about her and figure out that she’s just like Biden or worse.”
Harris’ team said after the debate voters need another look at the candidates.
“American people got to see the choice they will face this fall at the ballot box” but should have another opportunity before Nov. 5.
Trump said Harris wants another debate “because she lost tonight.”
“I don’t know that I want to do another debate,” he said Wednesday morning on Fox News.
While Harris has been viewed as the victor in Tuesday’s debate, there’s some concern whether that will translate into more votes. As such, Democrats are all for another debate.
“I’d certainly enjoy watching a repeat,” Sen. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) said.
“It was a wonder to behold. She was so confident and down to earth and in command,” Welch said. “I think she can repeat [her performance]. And I think Trump can repeat it.”
Democrats are concerned that voters don’t really know Harris, compared to the highly recognized Trump and she could benefit from another debate.
