Marjorie Taylor Greene Criticized After Comparison to Russia's Invasion of Ukraine

Share

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is taking heat for a strange comparison between the war in Ukraine and the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Greene said, “We had 5 million people cross our border illegally since Joe Biden took office.”

“And let’s compare that to how many Russians have invaded Ukraine. Eighty-two thousand Russians have invaded Ukraine,” she continued. “I think the American people and the taxpayers of this country deserve to know why the Biden administration and this Congress [are] so interested in funding the protection of Ukraine’s border, and not the protection of our border.”

She added, “That’s a very good question.”

Former Republican Rep. Denver Riggleman tweeted, “The current GOP establishment speaks… And it is dumb.”

“I’m sorry, if you’re not willing to admit this is stupid — I mean really stupid — then I can’t take you very seriously,” conservative commentator Jonah Goldberg wrote.

Do you think this was a poor comparison?

Former Republican presidential hopeful Joe Walsh reacted, “My head hurts.”

Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) wrote, “This person spewing gibberish and Russian propaganda will be one of the most powerful republicans in Congress next year, maybe even more than the so-called incoming speaker.”

Greene’s comments may initially seem to make sense and sound good to some.

But there is a pretty stark difference between people fleeing violence and oppressive regimes looking for better economic opportunities and safety, and a trained military force launching an unprovoked war on its neighbor with the goal of wiping out its identity and absorbing it into Russia.
