How to fold a fitted sheet

For anyone who wants a rumpled elastic sheet to become a neat rectangle that stacks flat.

Every move tucks elastic corners into each other so the sheet lies flat like a regular sheet and folds without springs. Gather: one clean fitted sheet and a clear table or bed surface about waist height.

Step 01
START with the sheet inside out, short edge facing you, and one hand deep in each of the two nearest corner pockets.
Push your fingers all the way into the sewn pockets until the elastic sits against your palms. Hold the sheet up so the rest hangs down. You know the grip is right when both corner seams sit on top of your hands and the long side hangs evenly between them.
Step 02
TUCK the right corner over the left so one pocket nests fully inside the other.
Bring your right hand to your left and flip the right pocket over the left pocket. Keep both elastic edges aligned. The nested pair should now sit as one thick corner in your left hand with no loose flap sticking out.

Step 03

REACH down the hanging side, find the next free corner, and slip it over the nested pair the same way.

Keep holding the first nested corners in one hand. Slide your free hand into the third corner pocket, then fold it over the pair already in your other hand. All three corners now share one stack; the last corner still hangs free.

Step 04

CAP the last free corner over the stack so every elastic edge sits inside one neat pocket bundle.

Work the final corner pocket over the three already nested. Smooth the elastic so it lies flat against the others. You have succeeded when you hold a single rounded corner bundle and the sheet hangs in a rough long rectangle with two curved sides.

Step 05

LAY the sheet on the table, bundle corner at the top, and smooth it into a long rectangle.

Set the corner bundle down first, then pull the opposite end straight. Tuck any remaining curved elastic edges inward so both long sides run straight. The sheet is ready when it looks like a thick flat sheet with two tidy long edges.

Step 06

FOLD in thirds lengthwise, then in half or thirds again to the size that fits your shelf.

Bring one long edge across the middle, then the other long edge over it. Fold the resulting strip from one short end toward the other until the packet matches your linen stack. Press each crease with your palm so the packet stays closed.

The most common mistake

Leaving corners right-side out so elastic fights every fold. Turn the sheet fully inside out before you nest any pockets.

Pro tip

If the sheet is still warm from the dryer the elastic is softer and the corners nest with less tug.
