How to lead a small group Bible study

Leading a small group Bible study is guiding others through one Scripture passage so they discover its meaning themselves. It works by preparing open questions ahead and keeping your own words fewer than the group's.

Have ready a Bible for each person, three written open questions on the passage, chairs set for a circle, a notebook, and a short opening prayer ready to speak.

PREPARE the passage the day before by reading it twice and writing its main point in one plain sentence.
Underline repeated words or names you see. If the point still feels foggy, read the verses just before and after until one clear idea stands out. The prep is solid when you can speak that sentence without glancing at the page.

SET the chairs in a close circle so each person sits two to three feet from the next.

OPEN with a spoken prayer under twenty words that asks God to help the group understand the text.

LISTEN to each reply with eyes on the speaker and no added comment of your own.

Nod once and keep your hands still. If you feel the urge to fill or correct, jot a private note instead and stay quiet. You stayed on track when the first speaker finishes and a second person builds on the same point.

CLOSE by restating the one main takeaway in under twenty words and offering a one-sentence prayer.

Say ‘Tonight we saw that…’ then stop. If time remains, invite one volunteer to add a short prayer; otherwise end yourself. The finish is clean when people stand holding one clear idea.

You fill every silence because dead air feels risky. Count to ten in your head and let the group discover the point themselves.
