How to pitch a tent

For first-time campers who want a stable, dry shelter up before dark.

Every step starts from a flat clear spot so the fabric stays taut and sheds water.

You'll need: tent body, poles, stakes, rainfly, footprint if you have one, and a clear 10-by-10-foot space.

Step 01
PICK a flat patch at least 10 feet by 10 feet with no rocks or roots underfoot.
Walk the ground and kick aside every sharp object. You know the spot works when both boots rest level with no rock. If the ground drops more than two inches across six feet, move until it flattens.
Step 02
SPREAD the footprint first, then the tent body on top with the door aimed away from the wind.
Pull each corner until the floor lies smooth under your palm. Face the door to the lee side. The layout is ready when no wrinkles remain and the door opens clear.

Step 03

STAKE each corner loop at a 45-degree angle outward, driving the stake until two inches of head remain above soil.

Strike the stake firmly into solid ground. You feel the hold when a hard tug on the loop meets solid resistance. If the soil is soft, angle the stake farther out and drive it deeper until it grips.

Step 04

THREAD the assembled poles through the sleeves or clips until both tips seat fully in the opposite grommets.

Snap every pole section together first so each rod reaches full length. Slide them gently to avoid fabric snags. The poles sit right when the tips click into the metal rings and the rods form clean arches.

Step 05

RAISE the pole structure by lifting the center until the walls stand vertical and the floor pulls tight.

Push upward from the middle while the staked corners stay put. You see success when the walls form even triangles with no sagging panel. If one wall droops, reseat that pole tip and lift again.

Step 06

CLIP the rainfly over the poles and fasten every buckle so the fly sits two inches above the tent body.

Drape the fly so its seams follow the poles. Secure the corners last. It is set when the gap stays even all around and no fabric touches the inner tent.

Step 07

TIGHTEN each guy line to a stake placed four feet out, pulling until the wall fabric feels drum-tight.

Walk the line out, stake it at 45 degrees, then slide the tensioner. You hear the right pitch when a light tap sounds firm, not floppy. If a line still sags, move the stake farther and retie.

The most common mistake

Loose corner stakes let the tent collapse when wind hits. Drive each stake fully and test with a hard tug before you raise the poles.

Pro tip

Keep the door zipped shut while raising the poles so the fabric stays aligned and never snags on a pole tip.
