How to sew on a button

For anyone facing a popped button who needs a firm hold that survives daily wear.

The thread must cross each button hole several times and lock on the back so the button cannot twist free. A small gap under the button lets the fabric slide through when you fasten it. Gear: a needle, eighteen inches of matching thread, the button, scissors, and a toothpick.

Step 01
THREAD your needle with eighteen inches of thread doubled so both cut ends hang even.
Tie those ends in one overhand knot and tug until it sits tight. You know it is ready when both strands match in length and the knot does not slip. If one end runs long, pull it back until the ends meet.
Step 02
PUSH the needle up from the fabric underside at the exact button spot so the knot stops flat on the back.
Keep the knot on the wrong side of the cloth. The placement is right when no knot shows on the front face. If the knot pops through the weave, tie a bulkier knot and push up again.

Step 03

SET the button over the exit point and slide a toothpick between button and fabric for spacing.

Line the holes over where the thread came through. You see the gap is correct when the toothpick lies snug and the button still sits level. If the button tips, shift it until all edges rest even.

Step 04

DRIVE the needle down through the far hole and back up through the near hole six full times.

Pull each pass snug but stop before the fabric puckers. Count six complete round trips; the button holds when it no longer spins on the thread. If you went under six, add passes until the spin stops. If the fabric gathers, ease the last pull.

Step 05

WRAP the working thread six times around the thread stem under the button after you pull out the toothpick.

Wind tight against the fabric face. The shank is done when the button stands slightly raised and can rock a little. If you wrapped under six turns, wind more until the stem feels firm to the touch.

Step 06

KNOT the thread on the fabric underside with two tight overhand knots close to the cloth.

Push the needle down near the shank first so you work from the back. You know the lock holds when the knots stay put after a firm tug. If a knot slides, add a third knot before you stop.

Step 07

SNIP the spare thread close to the final knot, leaving a tail no longer than your pinky nail.

Cut with the scissors tips only. The finish is clean when the tail lies flat and invisible from the front. If the tail is longer, trim again; if you cut into the knot, re-tie before the thread pulls free.

The most common mistake

Skipping the toothpick gap leaves the button sewn flat so thick fabric will not slide under it. Always keep the spacer in until the stitches are done, then wrap the shank.

Wax the thread lightly on a block of beeswax before threading so it glides and resists tangles.
