Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) has cut more than half of its admissions seats in two graduate programs over the next two years in order to “balance both our academic and fiscal responsibilities.”

More than 75% of PhD seats have been cut from the science division and approximately 60% of slots for the Arts & Humanities division are no longer available, according to The Harvard Crimson. Just weeks ago, Harvard won a lawsuit against the Trump administration after the federal government cut over $2 billion in grants from the school, and the majority of that funding has since been restored.

Despite the seemingly improving financial situation, alongside its growing multi-billion-dollar endowment, the university has stated major cuts are required as Harvard tightens its budget.

Harvard did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Do you believe the cuts to Harvard's admissions are justified given the financial challenges?

Some departments within FAS, such as the German department, will be unable to enroll any new students due to the cuts. Harvard’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) also cited “the uncertain financial landscape” as the reason behind its decision to deny all waitlisted applicants prior to its win against the Trump administration.

Similar cuts are being seen across many of Harvard’s other schools. The university has also paused hiring for some departments.

Although the university won its federal funding battle against the Trump administration, the university may not be in the clear. Along with outright cutting funding, the administration has found more ways to target Harvard, such as limiting its ability to enroll foreign students — a major source of revenue for many schools — and attempting to strip the school of accreditation.

Harvard so far seems to be complying with several orders from the administration, such as proving the citizenship and work eligibility of its employees and shutting down its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) offices.
