Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett committed on Sunday to conduct an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump if she becomes chair of the House Oversight Committee.
If Crockett is elected ranking member on June 24 and Democrats win control of the House in the 2026 midterm elections, she would assume the chair position. Crockett said on “Inside Texas Politics” that she would “absolutely” launch an inquiry, citing Elon Musk’s work for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and Trump’s battles with Harvard and law firms as potentially illegal acts.

“I would absolutely at least do an inquiry. Absolutely. I mean, I think that there’s more than enough to inquire about. You know, we know—well, we don’t know. We still don’t even know. I brought up Elon Musk a little bit earlier,” Crockett said. “We don’t understand what all they were doing, what kind of deals were even made for Elon to be given this amount of privilege. The firing of the inspectors generals, you know? He went in, next thing you know, inspector generals that were investigating Elon, they’re getting fired.”
“And then the pressure that he’s put on various organizations — we saw that the merger with Verizon was able to take place only once they said no diversity, equity, or inclusion,” she continued. “We know that they have put a ridiculous amount of pressure and seemingly are trying to pull back resources from the likes of Harvard, because Harvard decided that they were gonna push back against his illegality.”
Crockett alleged that Trump has targeted law firms because he wants them to provide free legal defense from them, which she said he will require.
“We know that he’s shaken down so many of these law firms for free legal fees because he’s gonna need them, because the one thing that we know is that he likes to violate the law, whether it’s criminal or civil. So these things need to be fleshed out and we need to fully understand. And in fact, that’s the Trump stuff,” she said. “And the reason I bring up the Trump stuff is because there is one committee in the Congress that has the authority to actually do oversight over the president. It’s the Oversight Committee. It is the only one that has that ability. And so I think that we need to make sure that we do it. I think that no matter what happens, history needs to know the truth.”
Democratic Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly, the ranking member of the Oversight Committee, passed away on May 19. He had also announced in April that he would not seek reelection following the return of his esophageal cancer diagnosis.
Crockett also said on “Alex Witt Reports” on May 25 that the Oversight Committee would investigate Trump if Democrats retake the House.
“As someone who serves on the Oversight Committee and hopes to lead the Oversight Committee, I can guarantee you that we will do what we are supposed to do as constitutionally sworn members of the House,” she said.
“Which means that we will conduct oversight, that means that we will investigate, we will look at whether or not this president himself has violated the Emoluments Clause as relates to say such things as getting a $400 million plane from the Qataris,” she added. “We also will make sure that we’re looking into all these business deals that they have going on.”
