What it's about
Steven Johnson argues that the doubling of human life expectancy over the past century is one of the great underappreciated achievements in history, and that it was accomplished not by a handful of medical geniuses but by unglamorous systems: clean water, vaccines, safety regulation, and above all the practice of counting deaths carefully enough to know what was killing people. The book matters because it reframes progress as a story of institutions and data rather than lone inventors.

Who it's for
- Readers who want a data-driven history of public health rather than a celebrity-scientist narrative - People curious why life expectancy jumped from 30 to over 70 in roughly a century - Policy-minded readers interested in what actually works to save lives at scale
What’s inside
- 1The Doubling1 min
The roughly two-fold increase in global life expectancy since 1900 is a bigger story than any single war, revolution, or technology of the era, yet it rarely gets treated as one.
- 2Counting the Dead to Save the Living1 min
Statistical measurement of death, not clinical treatment, was the essential precondition for nearly every major gain in life expectancy.
- 3The Water Nobody Noticed1 min
Chlorinating public water supplies quietly saved more lives than most heralded medical breakthroughs, precisely because nobody could see it working.
- 4Milk, Meat, and the War on Invisible Contamination1 min
Pasteurization and food safety regulation succeeded by treating contamination as a systemic risk to be engineered out, not an individual failure to be blamed.
- 5Eradicating a Disease from the Planet1 min
Smallpox eradication proves that coordinated global institutions, not individual medical breakthroughs, are what convert a known cure into a finished victory.
- 6Turning Fleming's Accident into an Industry1 min
Penicillin only became a life-saving drug because wartime industrial mobilization solved a mass-production problem that Alexander Fleming himself could not.
- 7Feeding Billions Without Starving the Planet1 min
Synthetic fertilizer, not agricultural technique alone, is the single innovation most responsible for allowing world population to quadruple without mass famine.
- 8Regulating the Machines That Kill Us1 min
Government safety mandates, not consumer choice or market pressure, were what actually made everyday technologies like the automobile survivable.
