What it's about
Adapted from wartime BBC radio talks, the book argues that the moral sense common to human beings points beyond itself to a moral lawgiver, and that Christianity, not vague theism, best explains both the moral law and human failure to keep it. Lewis writes for skeptics and believers alike, deliberately avoiding denominational disputes to defend what he calls the shared core of Christian belief. It mattered because it reached a mass, largely secular radio audience during the Second World War and became one of the most widely read works of Christian apologetics in English.

Who it's for
- A skeptic willing to follow a plain-spoken argument rather than dismiss religion outright - A lapsed or uncertain believer looking for reasons, not just reassurance - A churchgoer who wants the intellectual case behind familiar doctrines explained plainly
What’s inside
- 1The Clue in Quarreling1 min
The way people argue about fairness, even while disagreeing about specifics, reveals a shared moral standard that cannot be explained away as mere personal preference or social convention.
- 2A Law Without a Lawgiver Is Odd1 min
The universal human experience of failing to live up to a moral standard we did not choose suggests a mind behind the universe rather than a purely impersonal set of physical laws.
- 3Neither Dualism Nor a Simply Good World1 min
Christianity's claim that the world is fundamentally good but has gone wrong through misused freedom fits human experience better than either simple optimism or a belief in two equal, opposing powers.
- 4Liar, Lunatic, or Lord1 min
If Jesus's recorded claims to forgive sins and to be one with God the Father are taken seriously, he cannot be reasonably regarded merely as a great moral teacher without also being either a liar or delusional.
- 5Virtue as Trained Habit1 min
Good conduct is not primarily about isolated right actions but about the gradual shaping of character through repeated practice of the classical virtues — prudence, temperance, justice, and fortitude.
- 6Pride as the Central Danger1 min
Pride, understood as the drive to be superior to and independent of others, is the deepest and most corrosive vice, more dangerous than the more visible sins it often hides behind.
- 7Charity as Action, Not Feeling1 min
Christian love, or charity, is fundamentally a matter of consistent action toward others rather than a spontaneous emotional warmth, meaning it can and should be practiced even toward people one does not currently like.
- 8Faith as Trust That Outlasts Mood1 min
Christian faith is less a single act of intellectual assent and more a trained trust that must be deliberately maintained against the natural drift of mood and doubt.
- 9Becoming a New Kind of Thing1 min
The ultimate aim of Christianity, on Lewis's account, is not moral improvement of the old self but the emergence of a genuinely new kind of person, remade through participation in the life of Christ.
