What it's about
Blake Snyder argues that successful movies, across genres and decades, follow a small number of repeatable structural patterns and beat sequences. He distills this into a 15-beat template (the Blueprint), a genre taxonomy he calls the ten basic plots, and practical craft rules like making the hero likable early through a 'save the cat' moment. The book mattered because it turned intuitive Hollywood storytelling wisdom into a checklist writers and executives could actually use to diagnose scripts.

Who it's for
- Aspiring screenwriters who have a concept but no structural map - Novelists and TV writers seeking a diagnostic tool for pacing problems - Story editors and producers who need shared vocabulary to critique drafts quickly
What’s inside
- 1The Logline Test1 min
A story's commercial and dramatic viability can be judged before a single page is written, by whether its premise compresses into an irony-driven one-line pitch.
- 2The Save the Cat Scene1 min
Audiences will forgive a flawed or unlikable protagonist almost any fault except a lack of an early, concrete demonstration of decency.
- 3The Board Before the Draft1 min
Outlining on index cards before writing prose prevents structural collapse that rewriting cannot reliably fix.
- 4The Blueprint's First Half1 min
The first half of a well-built story follows a fixed sequence of beats - not because audiences consciously expect them, but because each beat solves a specific narrative problem the previous one creates.
- 5The Midpoint and the False Victory1 min
A story's middle needs an artificial high or low point around its exact center, or the second act reads as a shapeless stretch of complications with no internal shape.
- 6Break Into Three and the Thematic Payoff1 min
The climax only satisfies if the hero applies a lesson drawn specifically from the B-story's thematic thread, not just from accumulated plot momentum.
- 7The Ten Basic Genres1 min
Genre, in Snyder's system, should be defined by the deep structural pattern a story follows, not by its setting, marketing category, or surface content.
