What it's about
Richard Preston's 1994 nonfiction account traces the emergence of Ebola and Marburg viruses from African rainforests to a monkey quarantine facility outside Washington, D.C. The book argues that deadly filoviruses are not exotic curiosities but a preview of what happens when human activity intrudes on ancient, isolated ecosystems. It mattered because it brought hemorrhagic fever into mainstream awareness years before West Africa's 2014 epidemic, shaping public imagination and pandemic policy debates alike.

Who it's for
- Readers who want a fast-paced, factual thriller built from real medical records and interviews - Public health or biology students seeking a narrative entry point into virology and biosafety - Anyone curious about how the U.S. military and CDC handle domestic outbreak threats
What’s inside
- 1A Body Liquefying From Within1 min
Preston argues that filoviruses form a uniquely horrifying class of pathogen because they attack connective tissue and blood vessels themselves, not just organs, producing a death unlike almost any other human disease.
- 2Charles Monet and the Cave1 min
Preston uses Charles Monet's death to argue that a single tourist's visit to a remote cave can be the entire mechanism by which a lethal virus crosses into the modern world.
- 3Ebola's First Recorded Outbreaks1 min
The 1976 Zaire and Sudan outbreaks show that hospitals without strict sterilization discipline can become amplifiers of a virus rather than places of containment.
- 4The Monkey House in Reston1 min
Preston argues that the 1989 Reston outbreak proved a member of the Ebola virus family could become airborne among primates, putting humanity one mutation away from a far worse scenario.
- 5The Suits and the Soldiers1 min
Preston contends that the actual last line of defense against an emerging virus reaching American soil was a small team of military scientists, not the civilian public health system.
- 6The Culling of Reston1 min
Preston argues that the successful containment at Reston depended as much on the virus strain's low pathogenicity to humans as on the skill of the response, exposing how close the outcome could have gone the other way.
- 7The Search for a Reservoir1 min
Preston argues that the persistent scientific failure to identify the natural animal reservoir of Ebola and Marburg reveals how little control humans actually have over these viruses despite decades of study.
- 8Ecosystems Under Pressure1 min
Preston's broadest claim is that Ebola, Marburg, and HIV are symptoms of the same underlying process, in which human population growth and deforestation are releasing ancient pathogens from long-isolated ecosystems.
About Richard Preston
Richard Preston is an American journalist and longtime contributor to The New Yorker, where his reporting on the Reston, Virginia Ebola scare first appeared before becoming this book. He has no medical degree but spent years embedded with U.S. Army virologists and outbreak survivors, favoring direct interviews and primary documents over secondhand accounts.
