It took all of three and a half days—less than 80 hours—for New York City’s newly minted Democratic Socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani to step up to the mic, look around at a city already drowning in crime, debt, and dysfunction… and decide his biggest priority was defending an allegedly drug-trafficking dictator.

That’s right. While the city’s infrastructure creaks like a 100-year-old fire escape and everyday New Yorkers are dodging both potholes and policies, Mamdani used his first national spotlight moment not to address, say, the surge in subway stabbings or the ever-expanding migrant hotel budget—but to rage against President Trump’s bold, decisive takedown of Nicolás Maduro. A man allegedly responsible for narco-trafficking, torture, and dismantling Venezuela’s democratic institutions. But to Zohran? Just another misunderstood socialist pal.

I was briefed this morning on the U.S. military capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, as well as their planned imprisonment in federal custody here in New York City.

Unilaterally attacking a sovereign nation is an act of war and a violation of federal and…

— Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani (@NYCMayor) January 3, 2026

Maduro’s arrest—executed flawlessly by U.S. special forces in an operation straight out of a Tom Clancy novel—landed him squarely in the hands of the Southern District of New York, where he’s now facing criminal charges. Fitting, isn’t it? A dictator brought to justice… in the very city whose own mayor is out here clutching pearls over “violations of federal and international law.”

Let’s unpack that for a second. Mamdani is furious that we dared touch the sacred cow of socialism. His post on X declared that America’s action was an “act of war” and, somehow, a threat to the safety of New Yorkers. Yes, really. According to Zohran, New Yorkers should be worried not about the crime on their blocks or the rats in their walls—but about America holding a dictator accountable.

Apparently, Maduro’s downfall “directly impacts” his city. You know what else impacts your city, Mr. Mayor? The fact that your policies—rent control on steroids, anti-police rhetoric, tax-the-rich tantrums—are already scaring off what’s left of New York’s tax base. And just like Maduro, Zohran’s got his very own “socialist paradise” blueprint in hand.

But here’s where it really gets good.

Zohran didn’t just tweet his outrage. Oh no. He called President Trump directly. Yes, that’s right: the newly-elected socialist mayor of NYC thought the man who made “America First” a global policy doctrine would suddenly backpedal because of a phone call from the city’s latest Chavista cosplay enthusiast.

Should Mayor Mamdani have focused on local issues instead of defending Maduro's capture?

Let’s be honest: Trump probably heard “Hello, this is Zohran Mamdani” and immediately started mentally drafting his next Truth Social zinger. Mamdani said the call was “brief.” You think? I can only imagine Trump hitting him with a “Very interesting. Anyway, good luck with your rats.”

Zohran wouldn’t reveal how Trump responded (which speaks volumes), but the damage was already done. His post on X got absolutely ratioed by everyday users, many of whom pointed out that—spoiler alert—most Venezuelans living in New York cheered Maduro’s arrest. These are people who fled the very regime Mamdani is defending. The socialist experiment they escaped? Yeah, that’s the same playbook Zohran’s trying to recycle in NYC, minus the tropical weather and with bonus congestion pricing.

Here’s the thing: Socialism fails. Every. Single. Time. It leaves grocery shelves empty, bank accounts frozen, and people desperate to escape. Maduro turned Venezuela into a cautionary tale for the ages, and now he’s facing the legal reckoning he dodged for years. And instead of standing with the people—many of whom are his own constituents—Zohran decided to plant his flag firmly on the wrong side of history.

So while President Trump was busy reasserting American strength and reminding tyrants across the globe that we mean business, NYC’s new mayor was busy virtue-signaling into a void. And let’s be honest—if Zohran’s first move as mayor is to defend an allegedly criminal regime leader, what exactly is he planning for the rest of his term?

If this is the direction New York City is heading under Mamdani’s watch, buckle up. Because when you start your term by defending the indefensible, there’s only one direction to go—down. Fast.

And if Venezuelans in New York needed a reminder of why they left? Their new mayor just gave them a very loud, very public one.
