Political analyst Mark Halperin said Tuesday that Vice President Kamala Harris faces an uphill battle if she were to seek another political office, whether she runs for president again or enters the race for California governor.

Harris aides and allies are split on whether she should seek the governorship or aim for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028, with the decision hinging on their assessment of her chances at securing the nomination, CNN reported. Halperin, on “The Megyn Kelly Show,” argued that Harris would likely have a better shot at winning the California governor’s race than the Democratic presidential nomination, but warned that the path would not be easy for her.

“I find it hard to believe that she could build support. The stories — it’s just, it’s so disappointing to see our colleagues, just as they did during the four years of the Biden administration, failing to cover the truth right before our eyes,” Halperin said. “Is her poor performance the only reason she didn’t win? No, but it’s right up there … I think both [President] Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have escaped a lot of the blame that falls to them, and that’s not just my view, but the view of a lot of Democrats — donors and members of Congress, etc.”

“I think her chance[s] of being governor of California are greater than being the Democratic nominee, but I don’t think they’re as great as people say, because again, her challenge is her weakness. She does not like to make difficult choices under pressure, and that is the job description for running for governor of California, being governor of California, running for president, being president,” he continued. “So I think she might try, but I think she’d be surprised at how tough it is. And finally, I’ll say I’m not sure she wants to be governor of California. It’s not a great job right now, and so why she’d run and risk losing, and then if she did win, get the job — I’m not really sure.”

Halperin asserted in November that the way Harris lost each time she ran for president raises doubts about her viability as a future presidential candidate.

“She’s now run twice and done poorly both times, and I think it’s incumbent upon the media and Democrats — have an honest and fair discussion about whether this is the right role for her, because she’s 0 for 2 in pretty dramatic fashion,” he said.
