McCarthy met with Trump in January at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, as IJR previously reported.
“Today, President Trump committed to helping elect Republicans in the House and Senate in 2022. A Republican majority will listen to our fellow Americans and solve the challenges facing our nation,” McCarthy said in a statement after the meeting.
He added, “Democrats, on the other hand, have only put forward an agenda that divides us — such as impeaching a President who is now a private citizen and destroying blue-collar energy jobs. For the sake of our country, the radical Democrat agenda must be stopped.”
McCarthy also said, “A united conservative movement will strengthen the bonds of our citizens and uphold the freedoms our country was founded on.”
As CNN notes, McCarthy’s upcoming meeting with the former president comes as he is considering who he will appoint to the select committee to investigate the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.
During an interview with CNN, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) explained how she believes McCarthy should go about selecting his members.
“It’s very important that we have members who are committed to upholding the rule of law and members who are committed to their oaths to the Constitution,” Cheney said.
She continued, “And I would certainly hope that the minority leader will be guided by that as he makes his choices.”
The House minority leader blasted Cheney for accepting a position on the committee from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as IJR reported.
“I was shocked that she would accept something from Speaker Pelosi,” McCarthy said.
He added, “It would seem to me that, since I didn’t hear from her, maybe she’s closer to [Pelosi] than us, I don’t know.”
