The president of the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers said Thursday that Minneapolis Public Schools will allow students to shift to virtual learning through Feb. 12.

The move followed an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent fatally shooting 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good during an enforcement operation in Minneapolis on Wednesday. Union President Marcia Howard said families may choose to keep students at home during the next five weeks, calling the virtual option a direct result of pressure from educators and parents.

“MPS is going to be offering an option for students to learn from home until February 12. This is an OPTION and exactly what so many families need right now,” Howard wrote. “MFE members brought this to MPS and MPS listened. Let’s stay strong together Minneapolis.”

The announcement followed a separate decision by Minneapolis Public Schools to cancel in-person classes on Thursday and Friday.

“Out of an abundance of caution because of safety concerns, there will be no classes on Thursday and Friday at Minneapolis Public Schools. Go to the MPS website for more details,” Howard posted Wednesday.

MPS and MFE did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

MPS shut down in-person classes for the remainder of the week as public safety concerns intensified following a deadly shooting tied to ICE. The notice said MPS has halted all district-run programs during the closure, including extracurricular activities, athletics, community education courses and adult education offerings. Officials said they are working alongside city leaders and emergency partners to manage response planning, but the district will not shift to online instruction during the pause.

The closures come as protests against ICE operations spread across Minneapolis and intensified after the shooting. Demonstrators have gathered in large numbers near the scene, with some confrontations turning hostile. Crowds have set American flags on fire, taunted federal officers and forced law enforcement in certain instances to use tear gas to disperse demonstrators.
