A brief courtroom appearance offered a stark glimpse into the ongoing case surrounding the deaths of a prominent Hollywood couple, as their son faced a judge with little emotion and few words.
According to the New York Post, Nick Reiner appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom on Wednesday, weeks after entering a not guilty plea in the killings of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner.
The hearing was short, lasting only a few minutes, as attorneys indicated they are still awaiting autopsy results. Reiner, 32, remained mostly silent throughout, offering quiet responses that at one point led the judge to ask, “is that a yes?”
Dressed in a yellow jail-issued top and blue pants, Reiner appeared pale and wore a full beard. While largely expressionless, he briefly directed a sharp glare toward prosecutors as they introduced themselves.
Reiner has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, along with a special circumstance allegation tied to multiple killings. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of life in prison without parole or the death penalty.
The case has drawn intense attention following the Dec. 14 deaths, which shook the entertainment community. The couple was found inside their Brentwood home, reportedly worth $20 million, with Reiner taken into custody the following day.
Details surrounding the hours leading up to the killings have also surfaced. Sources said Reiner had been involved in a “very loud argument” with his parents earlier that evening at a holiday gathering hosted by Conan O’Brien.
He was also said to have had a tense exchange with comedian Bill Hader at the same event before leaving abruptly.
In the aftermath, Reiner’s brother, Jake Reiner, shared his reaction in a written essay, describing the moment he learned of the deaths.
“I was in Union Station at a celebration of life for one of my best friends, Christian Anderson, who died in October,” Jake wrote. “It was at that moment I received a call from my sister Romy telling me our father was dead. Minutes later, she called back telling me our mother was also dead.”
He described the emotional toll of the news during his trip home.
“The 45-minute Lyft ride from downtown to the west side was unendurable. My world, as I knew it, had collapsed. I was in a trance. The only thing I could focus on was that I needed to get to my childhood home. I needed to get to my sister. I needed to figure out what the hell just happened.”
Jake also reflected on the added weight of the situation involving his brother.
“Sure, any loss of a parent is devastating, but nothing compares to losing both of them at the same time and, on top of that, having your brother be at the center of it. It’s almost too impossible to process.”
The couple’s daughter, Romy Reiner, was the one who discovered their bodies.
Nick Reiner, who reportedly had a strained relationship with his parents, has struggled with addiction for years and had entered rehabilitation programs multiple times since his teens.
His legal representation has also shifted. Attorney Alan Jackson briefly took on the case before withdrawing after just one week, telling the court he had “no choice but to withdraw and ask to be relieved.”
As proceedings continue, the case remains in its early stages, with key evidence still pending and further hearings expected.
