In a move that’s sending shockwaves through the football world, legendary coach Bill Belichick has not been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on his first ballot — and fans, players, and pundits alike are demanding answers.

With a résumé that includes six Super Bowl victories as head coach of the New England Patriots, plus two more as a defensive coordinator for the New York Giants, Belichick was widely expected to waltz into Canton, Ohio, with little debate. Instead, he fell short of the required 40 out of 50 votes, and even some of the NFL’s biggest stars are calling the result “insane.”

“Insane…don’t even understand how this could be possible,” Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes posted on X after the news broke.

Belichick himself was reportedly stunned. According to ESPN, after receiving the call from a Hall of Fame representative last Friday, he turned to an associate and asked, “Six Super Bowls isn’t enough?” before adding, “What does a guy have to do?”

It’s a question being echoed across the league.

Former NFL defensive powerhouse J.J. Watt didn’t mince words. “This has to be some knock-off Hall of Fame or something,” he posted. “There is not a single world whatsoever in which Bill Belichick should not be a First-Ballot Hall of Fame.”

Pat McAfee, too, blasted the decision. “Bill Belichick could be in [GOAT] conversations for Coach AND GM and he isn’t a first ballot Hall of Fame in the PRO FOOTBALL Hall of Fame,” he wrote.

According to ESPN, internal Hall of Fame committee discussions brought up the infamous Spygate and Deflategate scandals, which may have swayed some voters. But critics argue that Belichick’s historic win total (second all-time behind Don Shula) and two-decade dominance in New England far outweigh any controversies.

Should Bill Belichick have been a first-ballot Hall of Famer?

Belichick’s coaching tree is thriving. Former linebacker Mike Vrabel—now head coach of the Patriots—has led the team back to the Super Bowl in his first year. And longtime assistant Josh McDaniels is back at his side.

Belichick, now the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels, has had a complicated path through the NFL. From a rocky stint in Cleveland, to a one-day tenure as Jets head coach, to becoming a dynasty-builder in Foxborough, his story is one of unmatched influence—and undeniable results.

“The NFL [lost] a lot of respect today.”

Still, the Hall of Fame committee said no, at least for now.

“Politics kept him out,” a source close to Belichick told ESPN. “He doesn’t believe this is a reflection on his accomplishments.”

And most of the NFL seems to agree. Whether you love or hate him, Bill Belichick is one of the most iconic figures the game has ever seen. The idea that he’s not a first-ballot Hall of Famer? That’s not just a snub—it’s a scandal.
