House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) named her appointments to a select committee to investigate the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, including Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff (D-Calif.).
“It had been our hope to establish a bipartisan, independent National Commission, but there is no prospect for that Commission at this time,” Pelosi said in a statement.
She continued, “Yesterday, the House established the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol. Today, I am proud to name Members who will patriotically honor our oath and our responsibility to the American people: to seek the truth.”
The members of the committee include: Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), as chairman, Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), Schiff, Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Texas), Cheney, Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D-Fla.), Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), and Rep. Elaine Luria (D-Va.).
Pelosi said during a press conference on Thursday, “Congresswoman Liz Cheney of the Armed Services Committee has patriotically agreed to serve on the committee.”
She added, “We’re very honored and proud that she has agreed to serve on the committee.”

Cheney also said in a statement, “I’m honored to have been named to serve on the January 6th select committee. Congress is obligated to conduct a full investigation of the most serious attack on our Capitol since 1814.”
She added, “What happened on January 6th can never happen again. Those who are responsible for the attack need to be held accountable and this select committee will fulfill that responsibility in a professional, expeditious, and non-partisan manner.”
