Former MSNBC host Joy Reid is raising eyebrows again — this time by suggesting that Vice President JD Vance may be considering a dramatic personal shift to stay viable with the MAGA base.
According to Fox News, while speaking on the “I’ve Had It” podcast, Reid questioned whether Vance believes he needs a different kind of spouse to secure his political future after President Donald Trump leaves office.
She speculated that some MAGA supporters might not embrace Usha Vance, who is Indian American, as a potential first lady.
“They can’t have the successor to MAGA be the guy with the Brown Hindu wife,” Reid said. “They’re also Christian nationalists. That ain’t going to work. That’s why he’s throwing his wife under the bus. Poor Usha. Or she’s in on it.”
The conversation then shifted to Erika Kirk, widow of Charlie Kirk, whose friendly moment with the vice president at a recent Turning Point event drew social-media chatter.
“Playing slap and tickle with Erika Kirk, it’s the weirdest s— I’ve ever seen,” co-host Jennifer Welch said. “She’s like in her Tammy Faye era.”
Reid reacted strongly to the clip, recalling how Kirk embraced Vance during the event.
“Holding on the back of his head and rubbing on his head,” Reid said. She added that if she saw a woman hold her husband like that, she’d be suspicious. Reid also took a swipe at Kirk’s attire. “You not doing that right thing. [You’re] supposed to be a widow, you in leather pants? That’s not widow wear.”
Reid then floated a provocative theory — that the vice president leaving his wife for Kirk could be a strategic play.
“Wouldn’t it be the most perfect fairy tale, MAGA fairy tale, if he finally sees the light that he needs a White queen instead of this Brown Hindu?” she asked. “I mean, I’m not saying that’s happening, or maybe that Usha is not even in on it.”
Reid’s comments arrive months after MSNBC canceled her show in February. The network, now rebranded as MS NOW, moved on from the longtime progressive host. Reid currently appears on YouTube with “The Joy Reid Show.”
