A frequent critic of President Donald Trump is predicting that the president will defeat former Vice President Joe Biden (D) in the general election in November.

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) told Politico’s Jake Sherman, “I’m confident that we will keep the majority in the Senate.

He added, “And I actually, have long predicted the president will be reelected — I continue to think that’s the case.”

Romney’s comments come as a series of recent polls have painted a bleak picture for Trump’s re-election prospects. A recent Gallup poll found that Trump’s approval ratings plunged 10 points from a record high just a month earlier.

A separate CNN poll found Biden leading Trump by double digits. Trump’s re-election campaign demanded the network retract the poll and apologize.

But, CNN’s lawyers rejected the demand and called it “legally baseless,” as IJR reported.

While Trump’s approval ratings on a variety of issues have dropped, Democrats are increasingly optimistic about their chances of winning the White House and taking back the Senate in the general election.

Some Democratic operatives believe they have a chance to flip Georgia’s two Senate seats up for grabs in November.

Romney and Trump have had a contentious relationship since 2016 when Romney denounced then-candidate Trump.

Romney has also not been afraid to break from Trump since he won his Senate seat in 2018. Earlier this year, he was the only Republican senator to break from the party and vote to approve one article of impeachment against Trump.

The New York Times reported that Romney would not vote for Trump. However, Romney rejected that report, he told reporters, “I’m not going to be describing who I’ll be voting for.”

For his part, Trump has not missed an opportunity to take a jab at Romney, as IJR reported.

After Romney joined a Black Lives Matter protest in Washington, D.C., Trump took a swipe at the senator, “Tremendous sincerity, what a guy. Hard to believe, with this kind of political talent, his numbers would ‘tank’ so badly in Utah!”
