British comedian and actor Russell Brand has responded to recent charges that allege he committed rape and sexual assault.
According to Fox News, Brand was charged with five counts of rape and sexual assault by London’s Metropolitan Police on Friday, which include one count of rape, one count of indecent assaults, one count of oral rape, and two counts of sexual assault.
The allegations date back to between 1999 and 2005 and were made by four different women.
However, Brand denies the allegations and posted a video to X in which he thanked his fans before calling out the British government and the legal system which Brand said has been weaponized.
“I was a fool before I lived in the light of the lord. I was a drug addict, a sex addict and an imbecile, but what I never was, was a rapist,” Brand said. “I’ve never engaged in nonconsensual activity; I pray that you can see that by looking in my eyes.”
Brand noted that he is grateful to have the opportunity to defend himself.
“Of course, I’m now going to have the opportunity to defend these charges in court, and I’m incredibly grateful for that,” Brand said. “In the meantime, you lot, stay free, and we will be continuing to discuss this matter. Praise the Lord.”
According to a press release from Met Police, investigations began after allegations became public in September 2023, which Bran also denied at the time.
Brand has recently had an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, where he discussed his struggle with addictions and his eventual conversion to Christianity. Brand also moved away from making Hollywood films and now focuses on podcasts where he shares political and cultural commentary.
Previously, Brand was known for his left-leaning ideologies, but in recent years has become a supporter of President Donald Trump and recently spent time with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
