Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) insists President Donald Trump is distracting Americans from his response to the coronavirus pandemic with his suggestion to delay the upcoming presidential election.

Schumer is adamant Trump will not be able to change the date of the election and argued he needs to stop trying to use it as an excuse for his failure to handle the outbreak appropriately.

“All he wants to do is divert from his abject failure in the coronavirus crisis. He says, ‘Oh well maybe we won’t have an election.’ That’s up to the Senate and the House,” Schumer said on the Senate floor on Thursday.

He added, “President Trump, the election will be in November, on November 3rd, and you will not change it. Stop diverting attention President Trump.”

Schumer called on Trump to focus on the testing, unemployment and sending children back to school.

He also directed his attention to his Republican colleagues demanding they focus on the issue at hand and take action.

“We’re waiting for you to get your act together and understand the depth of this crisis, the breath of this crisis, and do something real, not a stunt,” Schumer said.

Trump issued a tweet on Thursday criticizing “universal mail-in voting” implying if Americans choose to vote this way in the upcoming election it will be “the most inaccurate” and “fraudulent election in history,” as IJR previously reported.

Schumer was not the only lawmaker to weigh in on Trump’s comments.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) shared her thoughts on his remarks, citing a clause in the Constitution granting Congress the power to set the date of the election rather than the president, as IJR previously reported.

After presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden predicted Trump would try and delay the election, Trump rejected the claim.
