Senate Democrats recently released survey data on their staff demographics, showcasing that energy committees host the highest percentage of LGBTQ employees.

LGBTQ staff members made up 22% of the Democratic employees on Senate energy committees, according to the data compiled on June 30. Senate Democrats have been completing their “diversity initiative survey” since 2017 and encourage offices to embrace “reflecting the diversity of our nation,” according to their website.

“Senate Democrats will keep pushing forward — because I believe the more inclusive our halls of power become, the more just, more capable, and more representative our democracy will be,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said. “Our nation has always drawn its greatest strength from its diversity — and we are stronger when every voice has a seat at the table. These numbers mark meaningful progress, but they are not the finish line.”

The data shows that Senate Democrat staff members on energy committees consistently have some of the highest percentages of LGBTQ members. 2025 data shows a 9% jump in LGBTQ Senate Democrat energy committee staff members since 2024.

The aging committee staff among Senate Democrats follows closely behind, with 20% identifying as LGBTQ. Agriculture and commerce committees tied for 3rd with 18%, according to the survey.

The data also lists the demographics of staff across Democratic offices, noting that Democratic Michigan Sen. Gary Peters had the most LGBTQ staff, at 31%. Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman’s staff was a close second, at 28%.

“To date, Senate Republicans do not collect nor release similar information on their staff,” the Senate Democrats note, mentioning that they hire almost 40% more “staffers of color” when the surveys began in 2017.

The percentage of Americans who identify as LGBTQ is 9.3%, according to a February Gallup poll. Gallup’s latest data reveals a drastic rise in LGBTQ-identifying Americans since it began polling on the subject in 2012, when just 3.5% of respondents identified as anything other than heterosexual.
