Federal immigration authorities in Massachusetts apprehended an illegal migrant accused of aggravated rape of a child and other violent crimes by local law enforcement.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested Bryam Saraguro Ramon, a 29-year-old Ecuadorian national, on July 27 in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts, according to a press release by the agency. Saraguro entered the country illegally several years ago through the southern border before making his way to the Boston area.

“Bryam Saraguro Ramon is charged with some serious and disturbing crimes against a minor in our Massachusetts community,” Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston Field Office Director Todd Lyons stated. “We will not allow noncitizen sexual predators to victimize the children of our neighborhoods unabated.”

“ERO Boston will continue to prioritize public safety by arresting and arresting egregious noncitizen offenders,” Lyons continued.

Border Patrol agents arrested Saraguro in May 2017 after he was observed unlawfully crossing into the United States near Laredo, Texas, according to ICE. The Ecuadorian national was handed a notice to appear before a federal immigration judge, transferred into ICE custody and eventually bonded out of the agency’s custody in June 2017.

Massachusetts State Police arrested Saraguro on July 23 on charges of two counts of aggravated rape of a minor, indecent assault and battery and two counts of distributing obscene material to a minor, according to ICE. The agency said it lodged an immigration detainer, a formal request to assume custody of the individual before being released back into the community, the very next day with the Bristol County House of Corrections.

Local law enforcement evidently honored the detainer request, as deportation officers were able to apprehend Saraguro on July 27 at the Bristol County House of Corrections, according to the agency. The Ecuadorian national remains in ICE custody.

The arrest of an alleged child rapist follows other high-profile crimes involving illegal migrants in the Boston area. An illegal migrant from Haiti was apprehended by deportation officers earlier this month after he was charged with raping a disabled child and released by local authorities in spite of a detainer request on him.

The state Massachusetts — which is currently reeling from an asylum housing crisis — is characterized as a “sanctuary” jurisdiction for illegal migrants by the Center for Immigration Studies, which cites a 2017 court ruling that largely prohibits local jails from holding a criminal migrant in their custody at the request of ICE.
