A tense moment in the stands turned into a story of kindness after one broadcaster decided to act when a young fan was left empty-handed.
According to the New York Post, during a game between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field, a home run ball became the center of an uncomfortable scene that quickly drew attention.
The moment unfolded in the bottom of the fifth inning when Cleveland’s Daniel Schneemann launched a two-run homer to right field.
As the ball came down into the stands, an adult fan initially fumbled it, sending it bouncing near a young girl who had rushed down the steps hoping to grab the souvenir.
Instead, the man reached in and took the ball from the ground before she could get it.
The interaction played out live on the Rays broadcast, leaving commentators visibly stunned.
“Give that ball back,” one broadcaster urged while the cameras remained fixed on the scene.
The girl’s disappointment was clear, but what happened next shifted the tone.
Ryan Bass soon appeared in the stands holding a baseball of his own. He approached the young fan and handed it to her, drawing an emotional reaction as she smiled — and then began to cry after the exchange.
“Just exercising all of that bonus girl dad energy,” Bass later wrote on social media while sharing a clip of the moment.
He also spent additional time with the family, posing for photos with the girl, her brother, and their mother.
“Baseball is the best! What a sweet little family,” he added.
According to the girl’s mother, Nikki DeVoe, the situation didn’t end there.
In a post shared later that night, she said her son had even approached the man to ask for the ball back.
“You know my son went to ask him for the ball, which was so brave,” she wrote.
After several innings — and mounting attention — the man ultimately returned the original home run ball to the girl near the end of the game.
“The pressure resulted in the man giving her the home run ball back 4-5 innings later towards the end of the game. It wasn’t the same but we appreciated him doing the right thing,” DeVoe wrote.
She also expressed gratitude for the response from those who stepped in, especially Bass and the Rays broadcast team.
“I cannot thank Ryan and Tampa enough for making things right. Thank you all for looking out for ALL young baseball fans. It is top notch sportsmanship. My daughter and I cried happy tears,” she added.
The moment quickly spread online, becoming one of the most talked-about fan interactions of the season.
On the field, the Rays edged out the Guardians with a 3-2 victory — but for many watching, the lasting memory came from what happened in the stands.
